The light novel series is written by Takumi Yanai, and the anime was produced by A-1 Pictures and Madman Entertainment. There is a manga series as well, with various spinoffs. There is no doubt that the show is very popular among viewers.

Will there be Gate Season 3? Canceled or Renewed
Unfortunately, there is no official announcement regarding Gate Season 3. The anime has not yet been renewed for another season.
There were rumors that the VFX team who created the first two seasons was hired for the third season as well, but A-1 Pictures has not made any official announcement for Season 3 of Gate.
Therefore, we are not sure if the anime is currently in production, or when it will be released. If however, VFX is working on Gate anime season 3, then we can expect the show to come back in 2023.
In 2017, Sentai Frameworks said that they were overwhelmed by the response to the show by the audience. They said the script for season 3 was hoped to finish in the Fall of 2017, but nothing has been heard since then.
Season 2 of Gate ended in 2016, so there has been a lot of time in between. Considering the timeline, we are not sure if the production company is planning for a comeback.

What is Gate Season 3 Release Date
As of today, there is no release date for Gate Season 3. There has been no official news regarding the renewal of the show from A1 Pictures, Madman Entertainment, and Sentai Filmworks.
Most anime websites claimed that the show will return for the new season in 2019, or 2020, but we know it never happened.
It is a common trend among popular anime like Gate to take huge gaps between seasons, but it’s been more than 6 years now, and there are no official words from the production company.

According to the timeline of the anime, we are not confident about the renewal of the show. Officials have been silent about season 3 of the anime till now, and there is nothing but speculation.
Some fans predicted that the third season will come sometimes in 2023, but as there has been no official announcements, so that’s not possible.

Gate: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri has a total of five volumes published between April 2010 to December 2011.
Under AlphaPolis, the story was reprinted into light novel series, as each volume was split into tankoban format.
There is also a sequel to the novel series, known as Gate: Weight Anchor that does not feature JSDF but includes the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The four-part series was launched between 2017-2019.
Apart from the light novel series, there is a manga series based on Gate as well. The manga has a total of 17 volumes till 2020. However, in 2021, Sekai Publishing dropped the entire project.
There is plenty of small spinoff series called 14-year-old Pina Co Lada and The Rose Knights of the Gate Empire in 2015. Another one is called Gate: Featuring the Starry Heavens’ in 2015, where the three female characters become music idols.
The second season of the anime ended in chapter 85 of the light novel series. Therefore, there is a lot of source material for anime content.
If you have read the manga and novel series, then you will know that the anime deviated from the main story. However, with so many spinoffs, there is a lot of material for another season.

Gate is a popular anime with a popularity rating of #220, and an audience score of 7.70 on MyAnimeList.
The show is loved by fans and critics, as it adapts many elements that blur between reality and fiction. There are a lot of fantasy creatures like dragons, elves, and demi-gods. The JSDF has more of a real role. The anime has great, diverse characters as well.

On IMDB, Gate anime has a rating of 7.5 with 3.4k reviews. According to critics, the show grabs your attention from episode one and throughout the seasons you are always wanting to know what happens next.
The anime is a classic Isekai (time travel) genre work, with a fun story, and great character development. The modern era mixed with the medieval era is awesome.
Gate Manga Sales and Revenue
In 2017, the novel series of Gates season 1 sold over 4.2 million copies in Japan only. Similarly, according to AphaPolis, the Gate manga series sold over 5 million copies.
The numbers alone show how popular the manga is. If we look at the DVD sales of anime, in 2015, Blu-Ray sales were around 4696 copies sold, making it to the list of Top 10 in Japan.
In 2016, season 2 of Gate sold over 4999 copies in Japan, indicating its popularity.
What is Gate Anime About
In Ginza, Tokyo a portal suddenly opens up, and medieval monsters and soldiers emerge from the Gate to attack the city. Using modern weapons, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces stand against the enemy forces.
The Japanese government passes through the Gate to establish an operational base and negotiate with the enemy. However, other countries are envious of Japan’s access to the Gate, raising more problems for the JSDF.
However, when humans start interacting with the other world’s creatures, they learn that the other world is on the brink of civil war. Can JSDF close the gate, before both worlds rip each other to pieces?
