In October 2012, we got the first season of Btooom! anime series. It’s been more than a decade and fans are still waiting for season 2. Here’s everything you need to know about Btooom Season 2.
Produced by Madhouse and directed by Kotono Watanabe, Btooom is based on a manga series of the same name written by Junya Inoue. There are currently 26 tankabon volumes.
The first season had 12 episodes that ran from October 14, 2012, to December 20, 2012. The survival, action anime quickly became popular among the fans in the West, but was not as famous as other similar anime in Japan.
Here’s everything we know so far regarding season 2 of Btooom!
Will there be Btooom Season 2? Canceled or Renewed
Unfortunately, Btooom Season 2 is canceled. It has been approximately 10 years since season 1 of the show premiered and it has not been renewed for another season.
The anime was based on the manga of the same name, so source material was not an issue. Even though fans loved the story and the anime is rated highly on sites like IMDB, or MyAnimeList, it did not perform well in terms of revenue.
Nonetheless, fans are still waiting for season 2 of Btooom! as you can see from social media platforms like Twitter and various fan pages.

Revenue is among multiple factors that determine whether the show will get renewed for another season or not.
Even though Btooom! is quite popular among the fans with high ratings and reviews, it is still not enough for production houses to renew the series, because of budget issues.
To finish the story, you can read Btooom! Volume 26 Dark Reality version or read Btooom! Volume 26 Light Friendship version depending upon your taste. If you want to pick your ending, you can read both versions and compare.
Btooom Season 2 Release Date | Why is it Canceled
Unfortunately, there is no Btooom season 2 release date as the show is canceled.
The source material was not an issue because the first season only covered 50 chapters of the manga, which is about 9 volumes. If you want to continue the story from there, you can read BTOOOM! manga Volume 10.
The final arc of the manga ended in March 2018 with a total of 26 volumes. After the manga ended, Hiroki Ito wrote a Btooom Spinoff called Btooom! U-18 in February 2018. The new manga is the prequel to the main story.
In 2017, the BTOOOM! game was also launched by Masato Hayashi and it immediately shot to the top of the free games chart. However, the fame was short-lived, as the game only stayed in Japan’s top 5 for a few weeks, after falling to the top 50 list.
The last update received of the Btooom! game was in 2017, and it still does not have an English port for iOS and Android devices.
I believe one of the major reasons behind the cancellation of the show and its bad reception is that due to similarity in the story, viewers compared Btooom! with Sword Art Online. Some viewers praised the show for its gritty visuals, while others call it the cheaper version of SWO with typical weapons and characters.
There are plenty of other anime out there waiting for renewals like Blue Spring Ride, Demon Lord Retry, and Black Bullet.
Btooom Reviews and Ratings
BTOOOM! has always been compared to Sword Art Online due to the similar plot and theme – but is darker, and gritty. Even though the anime became quite popular internationally, in Japan, BTOOOM! only sold 338 DVDs in Japan.
On MyAnimeList, Btooom has a high audience score of 7.31 and a popularity ranking of #174. Most critics have praised the anime, especially its characters who are based on real people and not anime archetypes.
Seriously anyone who loved Squid Games should definitely check out Btooom-!!
It’s got a similar plot and is a very enjoyable manga#btooom #SquidGames pic.twitter.com/TIj7bLDGMA— Roronoa || Karan 🌿 (@db_gmng) October 8, 2021
I also checked IMDB, and the show has a rating of 7.1/ 10 with good reviews. Some fans have called Btooom “Sword Art Online for adults” because it’s gorier and brutal. The main character isn’t any super-human and is a normal guy.
Finished #BTOOOM
Enjoyed and loved it; I wish we could have got an S2 because this anime deserves it. The animation was good, the story was quite intriguing and unique and the characters were well written. An unusual plot that deserved more episodes🥺; I recommend it🙌 pic.twitter.com/E73wqC6EhQ— Asporter_in_disguise (@moon_hellsing) November 28, 2021
